The Drove is a twice-annual evening curated by Chlo & Co Dance. Courtney and Chloë invite artists from the Bay Area to create work in response to given prompts that address an overarching theme for the evening. The evening is curated to create a diverse community of artists by providing them a venue and visibility for their work without the need to produce their own platform.

The Drove III examined mysticism and the inevitable.
Chlo & Co Dance premiered Illuminati, a new project shaped from airplanes, clouds and turning left. With an interest in how to challenge and inspect the ways that mysticism and the inevitable interact, the duo opened their process to allow the piece to shift and change with different spaces, times, and contexts. They also presented a new piece, 21 First Moves Feat Chloë.
Guest artists joined in the exploration, tackling space: big and little, orbits, sound, weight and The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

Edgar Mendez is a San Francisco native and a graduate of Saint Mary’s College of California with a split major in Dance and English. Over the course of his studies he found that dance was the only thing that fueled his soul and knew that this was what he wanted to experience in his life daily. He is currently a company member with Stranger Lover Dreamer and Davalos Dance company and has worked with choreographers Catherine Marie Davalos, Rogelio Lopez, Bliss Kohlmyer, Shaunna Vella, and Elizebeth Randall to name a few.

Kim Ip plopped into Oakland in 2010 and is not-so-freshly hatched from Mills College. When she’s not dancing, she works as a Pilates teacher and faux-mommy with the babies of SF. She completed a residency at SafeHouse Arts in 2016 and is an Artist in Residence at Shawl-Anderson. She currently dances for STEAMROLLER, Aisan Hoss, and her own project, Krimm’s Dance Party. She is honoured to be sharing the bill with such incredible bae area artists.

Hanna Rose Stangebye has a BFA in Dance From Western Michigan University and her primary forms of training include ballet, modern, and jazz. Since relocating to San Francisco Hanna Rose has performed as a freelance artist with various groups and as a soloist. She has been a resident artist with SAFEhouse on and off since 2014. Hanna Rose also teaches group fitness classes and has been the Managing Director at SAFEhouse for the Performing Arts since 2016. In the fall, Hanna Rose will be attending the Circus Center’s Clown Conservatory here in San Francisco in the pursuit of all that is funny.

Courtney Hope has collaborated with PUSH, David Herrera Performance Company, Sarah Bush Dance Project, Soulskin, and Bay Area Dance Collective lead by Khala Brannigan. She has performed at ODC Theatre, Z-space, Levy Salon and Dance Mission Theatre among others. Courtney has performed her own choreography at Levy Salon, SAFEhouse and The Hatch where she premiered her first production, CASUAL.

Are You Having Fun Yet? questioned the ways that the idea of “fun” manifests from a multitude of varying circumstances.
Chlo & Co Dance presented several vignettes and a new work, Grim Girls, Appearing Tonight As. Facing transition and challenged by the pace and expectations of the city, Courtney and Chloë continually found conversations reflecting on what fun is and how, why, and when it occurs. The vignettes and new work respond to their awareness that there may not be a single answer.
Guest artists responded to the concepts and prompts generated by Courtney and Chloë’s conversations, and the way that the notion of “fun” presents both challenge and joy: when it is fleeting, depletes, is physical, youthful, infinite, independent, stereotypical, or genuine…
Purse Party Tricks
Purse Party Tricks: Fun may seem effortless, but it’s is tucked in the seams of that girl at the party. She glitters, she glows, she’s the one everyone knows. Her words few, intentions true. Trinkets carried around, dazzle crowds. She sneaks you treats, adorns your hands with sparklers. You (both) feel alive in the night time.
Sophie Peoples is a queer artist, observer and coffee spiller living in San Francisco. She enjoys dancing and haribo gummy cherries. Her mind works by way of visual lists, which is reflected in her art. She enjoys monochromatic palettes and all things glitter. Garth Grimball is a native of North Carolina where he received his BA in Anthropology and Dance at UNC Asheville. He danced with Asheville Ballet for five seasons performing new and repertory works. He received his MFA in choreography and performance from Mills College where he was the recipient of the Liatis Foundation Dance Scholarship award and performed in works by Merce Cunningham, Mel Wong, Sonya Delwaide, Sheldon Smith, Katie Faulkner, and Molissa Fenley. He currently dances with Dana Lawton Dances and Wax Poet(s).

Two Points investigated the dynamics of distance.
Chlo & Co Dance presented Non-Concentric Circles, based entirely on material that was generated when Courtney and Chloë were separated by two state lines for a series of weeks. With a generative process structured around developing material each week and recording thoughts each day, the piece seeks to discover how two independent bodies of material can integrate and relate after experiencing distance.
Guests delved into their responses to the ways distance manifests: the state of the spiritual and physical body; relationships to home, to childhood, to the future; proximity and senses of security; encounters with other people; choice making.
I turned 5 riding an elephant
A series of photographs by Melissa Lewis. They were all taken on 35mm film in Kathmandu, Nepal. The images are a revisiting and a referencing to when her family lived in Kathmandu from 1996-1997. In 2013 she returned, yearning to capture her earliest memories—of the markets, the smells, the fear, the sacred, the otherness, and the home. I turned 5 riding an elephant. is an elegy to the foreign textures of her childhood.
